Professor Ramakrishnan you have done an enormous amount of work within India and globally on the issues of maternal nutrition
particularly around deficiencies and their affect both during pregnancy and beyond.
What is your current perspective given the knowledge
that we have on maternal under nutrition? What is that we should be doing in current programs to make a difference?
I think ensuring access for services is really important particularly during pregnancy. It is a critical vulnerable period so making
sure that women get quality antenatal care and time leave which includes monitoring weight gain, getting iron folic acid supplements
and safe delivery is very important to ensure good outcomes for the mother and her child because that affects the next generation
And do you think current programs are doing enough in terms of the mix of interventions that we have to improve maternal nutrition and health outcomes?
I think a lot of progress has been made with specific reference to India.
The national rural health mission has very good goals. The real need is to focus on implementation and monitoring how these programs are being rolled out.
There is always room for making modifications but they need to be done in the context of what we can do well.
Thank you, Thank you very much
