Siobhan: Hi, my name is Siobhan and I would like to welcome you to the Center for Learning
and Academic Success,
also known as CLAS. At CLAS, we offer a variety of services for students.
These include tutoring, academic coaching, and study groups to name a few.
Our center is a fantastic resource for students and we're centrally located in
the Sawyer Library.
Angela: I like it a lot, just based on --
-- people come to the library for books to learn more so it's kind of
of beneficial that you're also having the tutoring center in the same location so that way you can get all of your resources in just one spot.
Siobhan: We strive on being a welcoming and safe learning environment
for all Suffolk students.
Our CR, or Central Referral Staff, wants you to have a great experience from the time you
walk in to the time you walk out.
Katie: We serve so many more students
where we have all come to together into one big center -- it's a lot more people, a lot more
foot traffic coming through. So you kind of walk in and it is like 'Woah'
and we are there to greet you as a CR staff: 'Hi, welcome! Are you her for an appointment?
Do you need an appointment?'
It is also kind of fun and energetic.
We like to have fun with our role as a CR, we know that we are the first
impression when they walk through the door.
Siobhan: With a diverse selection of services, we aim to help students have a well-rounded
experience in the center. From workshops on how to better your study skills,
to math and writing support, our goal is to help students succeed.
Jorge: Really, it can't hurt and
it would only benefit your grade that much more.
The sessions are short, they're an hour.
By the end of the semester,
it makes a really big impact.
Caitlyn: Some of the services I have used were
math drop-in --
I also use academic coaching and still use it today --
and tutoring for formal logic.
They have benefited me because I have
excelled in a lot of my classes,
especially with academic coaching. I have a week to week
planning that I need to do. It is also a nice
venting session if anything is going wrong,
my coach is there for me and helps me work through it.
Siobhan: The majority of our services are conducted by fellow Suffolk students who have excelled
in their courses and have several instances used our services
in the past.
These students are just like you and want to give back to the Suffolk community,
as well as go academically and professionally.
Jorge: It keeps me organized. I know when I have an appointment;
I have to look into something a little before.
Depending on the where the semester is, I know more or less
what topics are covered at the time so I make sure I review them
and that is usually something that I do not do on my own. I kind of just --
-- I look at a problem and if I can do it, I can do it, but if I can't?
Oh well, but knowing that someone is
coming for help, I have to look into it, I have to know
how to approach it or how to teach someone this so that they can do it on their own.
Siobhan: Feel free to stop by any time, no matter if it is to work on a paper,
finish some homework, or just say hi.
