Theft and violence are important factors
that affect the transport industry around the world -
not only the business, but also the human factor.
Cargo and fuel are being stolen, drivers robbed or attacked
and whole combinations are being hijacked.
There are some measures that can be taken,
such as security features that make it harder for the criminal
and safer during overnight parking, for example.
Not to mention a reliable service network
that minimises the time spent exposed by the road.
John Jacobs in South Africa transports horses for a living
and often finds himself in, well, shady locations.
Let's hear his story.
I was driving from Hotazel in the Northern Cape
and you can't sleep anywhere on that road,
so at some stages you have to drive long hours
to get to the same spot.
It was four o'clock in the morning and I was quite tired.
When I woke up it was about six o'clock
and I walked around the truck
and I saw that my spare wheels were gone, both of them.
In South Africa, it's quite risky
to park anywhere, but it was at a truck stop,
so I thought it was safe, but it wasn't safe.
We try everything to safeguard these things,
but they happen daily and there's nothing you can do.
We put chains on the tyres and on the spare wheels,
but it doesn't help much.
The guys have equipment and take it off in five minutes.
There is no employment for the people.
That is one of the main reasons why people are stealing.
That's what I think.
Tough industry. Brave driver.
What's your story?
