I'm joined by bill share he is a senior writer at Campaign for America's future
also a columnist at the week bill
these new talking points on Obamacare it seems every week or every 10 days
there's a new set of talking points that start circulating now it's
there is the potential for $50 million to $100 million cancelled
insurance policies over the next year by October
up 20-14 what's the source love this new
talking point and is there any truth to it well
this is coming from the American Enterprise Institute which is a
conservative
think check every just on its face
its it's ludicrous that were country bridge a million people
Mike Moser Werner tyrone was an adult you have his
up you're busy suggested that every single insurance plans going to cancel
its not
but not mathematically possible I
you know what we why I can happen over time
is that I you know insurers and employers are going to make adjustments
to their plans they
date they were doing that before Obamacare will do after Obamacare called
call a free market I your I had my
premium jacked up on me before Obamacare got passes
other Americans dead so you can't
bit me every single change to an insurance plan
evidence that Obamacare is awful right well this question to connect back to
the same thing we had it was a couple of weeks ago when there were the stories of
people having their policies canceled now
and when we dug into it we started to find that will actually hold on a second
people who had policies that weren't were
pre-existing so to speak before Obamacare
those were grandfathered in it was the private insurers that continued offering
plans
that they knew or at least should have known
we're not going to to work under Obamacare they didn't tell
a lot of their policy holders that and to blame that on President Obama seemed
like quite a stretch
alright I mean what's happened so far has affected the
the individual market to people who don't get
insurance through their employer just they're they're buying it themselves at
their other
a small business owner or individual entrepreneur or
or otherwise buying it themselves check that's a very small portion of the
country
it's a market that has tones are turnover people don't usually buy
insurance net market
for more than a year two at a time anyway sir consciously changing their
plans
it's all this happened so far is since its Obamacare
pots of floor on the middleman to benefits at a plan has to offer
I their had a grandfather clause for some of the sub-standard plans but that
market just changed a lot to the grandfather clause
ends up getting are mu after I'm
at appear at a time there was always the law I was always openly talked about it
it should not be a surprise anybody if you're in that market you should have
been aware that that's as the gets the back
are what some folks are looking at now just the bus be honest about the numbers
here
are the Congressional Budget Office has projected
that by 2016 there would be
six million fewer people who received employer-based health insurance compared
to this year's differently the individual market that's the mark in the
most diverse terrain
who have salary jobs there that doesn't mean
6p people no longer have insurance
that means six many people were kept
at at of missus were the employer said
it's going to be in my best interest to
ship my employees on to the exchanges and not give them insurance directly
through me
the store get insurance when we look at
each of these paddock trendy talking points individually we find out pretty
quickly that there either
partially mostly or completely untrue however
it we still see in the numbers that this is having an effect there
is Sun stuff is sticking to the wall for lack of a better term when it comes to
sum up this and I'm seeing polls that show
the popularity of Obamacare as as a
things separate from these kinda underlying questions about health
insurance
popularity decreasing president Obama's approval decreasing
and I'm curious whether this is just being mishandled
by the white house or whether the right is doing a particularly good job at
getting stuff to stick
no i i think is more just the reality
are all ramp up a new program I i don't think the rights messaging is as any
magical to add their messages are pretty awful for several years up until this
point of that would have won
between two election or or one the shutdown for example
I but I read is the case
that year in this initial part of the Roman period
the website is is still in haiti though it gets better every day
I it if for example you get a notice from your insurer
that your current plan is ending and you don't have any easy way to find out what
your alternatives are
you're going to be very frustrating and I'm certain and
it was actually very small percentage to the country only takes a handful to get
media coverage it so that
that can create a broad level of uncertainty
a what comes next so that's that's gonna drive poll numbers down
up that would be a bigger concern
if are Obama was running for reelection
next week add equal would lose
in the next guy with an up and the entire program
but that's not what's happening it doesn't even matter if
Democrats lose the Senate in 2014 there the congress is it running the program
the executive branch's
Obama has essentially three and a half more years
to continue the implementation all this stuff is Norway's
they want to dampen noise down because they want people to sign up there will
be dissuaded for signing up
I but there's plenty of time to work through
I these players be the misinformation the
the hysterical I manufacturing zaidi
coming from the meeting came from the right and I we think about all those
bill when we think about each
each one of those there's never a comped there's never like a control group right
where we say okay
people like the website at a two out of 10
people like the average private insurance website
at a two out of 10 or whatever the number may be in other words people have
long been dissatisfied with their private insurers
there doesn't seem to be any comparison being made that these things
are never incredibly smooth as it is not only comparing to other programs as
as you did in your piece a couple weeks ago in the week whether it be social
security or whatever else
but even compared to what people had who was so thrilled with what they had
well the its some people worker I
by eat often you might think you have better insurance than you do you'll find
out that's bad too you're in trouble
I you that's why it's always very hard for
those on the hard left to get single-payer pass because ive
everybody openly he did what they had to be very easy to say
I want to go into the server level government plan but most folks
as it today like what they have rightly or wrongly
so it's easy to inject everyone certainty that all what you
like is going to be you stripped away from you
alright bill share senior writer Campaign for America's future also a
columnist at the week
bill thanks again for being on always a pleasure
