Instructors I would like you to know about Site info the first of the two tool every Sakai or Isaak course will have at Brock University
This is the Site info tool it can be found on the left handside of your course when you first start it up.
This is where you do do many important administrative or coordinating tools and functions of the course
Its, for instance a location where you can see a list of all the participants in your site.
And where you can do thing like add tools add participants and import contents from other sites. Some other things which we cannot discuss like managing groups.
When the first thing anyone want to do when they create a site is to add the tools they want, beyond the two tools that are available by default.
This can be done by going into the Site info tool and Edit Tools
You will then see a list of tools that sakai has to offer for your course.
you can check of the list of tools you wish to use is your course, mainly the tools that we covered in this podcast.
When you checked of that you want can go down to the bottom and press continue and when you confirm these are the tools that you do indeed want you can press finish.
many course have individuals involved into beyond the instructor, like TA, course, co-instructors or co-ordinator
To add anyone with the brock id, you can go into Site Info-->Add Participants.
Put in their individual campus ID, it could be a list of campus ID so all the 5 of your TA's in the list down there
press continue, now you can assign that individual specific role. instructors will have full access like you.
Teaching Assistant have less the have about what students have except that they can see hidden files.
and you have the option to give them more access to specific tools
Same goes for role for organizer and there is also a role for librarians.
The other two roles are students, please remember that when you request a Brock course the Registrar is going to add the students for you.
If you do need to add students in a service course or another unique situation you can do that.
So if you were to add your TA's, put their campus ID and hit continue
Select TA and click contunue it will ask you whether you want to email the person you can choose if you want to inform them or not.
The last step is Continue--> Finish. That individual will ahve access to our Sakai site based on the role you gave them.
The last part that I you want to let you know is to import content from other sites.
This is a really handy tool to migrate the content that you were using the previous year forward to the next and saving you a lot of time
In your new blank site you will goto site info and click on import from site
This is after you have turned on all the tools that you need to import.
That was the first step when we added tools.
In import from site you can choose replace,Merge or the third option to do with participants.
In most cases replace is the best bet on new course but clearly merge is better later on
Then you will get a list of course you will are a part of you can check of all the course from which you want to draw your content from
and then in the next page if you continue on you can choose which tools you would wanna import.
For Example in the next tool in the podcast is the Resources tool a tool that contains all the files.
You may want to import the resources from the previous course but not want to import the announcements as they may not be applicable
So you can choose that in this page. Continue-->Finish. It will import all the content you selected and your new site is ready.
