Hello. Today we'll open the game España 1936
a game about the Spanish Civil War of 36-39
from which I have the basic game and the Armada expansion about the sea war.
Let's take a look first at the basic game.
This game is edited here by Devir,
the box size is more similar to an eurogame than a wargame
and the design style is cartoonish, as we can see.
Maybe this is why it hasn't been much noticed, but as far as I know it's a good simple simulation of the Spanish Civil War.
Let's open it.
The game is designed by Antonio Catalán, a game designer from our land
and this is his first wargame, an effort of many years.
Let's open the box.
Here's the rulebook, in full color.
The rules are not complex, but the rulebook layout could be a little better.
Here are some badges from the Spanish Civil War.
The chronology of war as represented in the game.
A short review of this conflict and some designer's notes where Antonio Catalán explains why he created this game.
This is the initial setup.
As we can see each city has a double space
for the National units and the Republican units, they are not mixed.
It's a point to point system.
The initial units are printed on this map.
Let's see the map. It's mounted.
On the top we see the turn track.
I think the game starts with the war started and he had some ideas of also gaming the fascist coup.
The map is quite vanilla, without any chrome,
rather functional, here is a VP track
and the connecting lines are really clear.
Here are the counters.
Red and blue counters for both sides.
Units can be big rounded, small rounded or hexagonal depending on their kind of unit.
Here some aid tables.
Combat is played on this sheet where you place your starting units, reinforcements, assets...
It's a little game inside the game,
for some people it breaks the rhythm of the game but others like it.
Here are the cards. This is not a CDG,
the cards are used to help with playability.
And a bucket of dice.
And this is the basic game but we also have the Armada expansion,
let's open it.
This expansions adds naval units and rules for naval combat.
Some counters.
A little rulebook, 10 pages, explaining the naval rules,
a little map with the more important naval bases,
some more cards,
and a little play aid with the game sequence.
This has been España 1936 designed by Antonio Catalán with the Armada expansion.
