[Hayley Simmons] My first question is, can you explain, in general terms, what the intent
of the Summer Foods Service Program is? [Gail Lombardi] The Summer Foods Service Program
is a federally funded meals program and it operates during the summer when school is
not in session. So children who would be receiving free or reduced price meals during the school
year for breakfast and lunch have an opportunity to continue to receive a meal during the summer. Well,
the research shows that children who participate in the Summer Food Service Program learn less
of their learning over the summer than their peers who do not participate. So, all children
will lose some of their learning over the summer, but those children who participate
in the meals program lose less.
