The world's biggest tech firms are showing off their latest wares at the 2013 Mobile
World Congress in Barcelona.
A whole host of companies are in town, hoping to crack the mobile platform market that is
currently dominated by Apple and Google.
Ji Myung-kil reports. When you use your smartphone the operating system or OS is one of two things.
It is either Apple's iOS or its Google's Android.
But at this year's Mobile World Congress companies like Mozilla known for its Firefox Web browser
are dipping into smartphone operating systems.
Mozilla boasts it is the first to have open web standards such as HTML 5 meaning the platform
itself has more flexibility than iOS or Android.
With Mozilla's debut in emerging markets and its freshly-inked deals with phone makers
such as ZTE, Alcatel, LG and Huawei the platform war for mobile devices is ready to erupt as
Microsoft's Windows 8 platform and BlackBerry's BlackBerry 10 are also fighting to get a foothold
in the market.
Korea's tech giant Samsung Electronics says it has plans to phase out its Bada operating
system and focus on an open source OS called Tizen which it is working on with Intel.
Intel sees this opportunity to boost its mobile business.
Tech watchers say Samsung's partnership with Intel, the world's largest computer chip maker,
could potentially crack Apple and Google's stranglehold on the mobile platform market.
