Hi this is Miranda Thacker with your KYTC Minute. Kentucky Transportation Cabinet highway
crews and contractors work hard to ensure roads are in the best possible condition during
winter storms that bring snow and ice. Motorists, however, need to do their part to help keep
the roads safe for everyone during the winter months. Drivers should follow some basic safety
tips to prepare themselves for emergencies and avoid any problems on the road. Always
check weather conditions before your trip and avoid driving if conditions are hazardous.
Updated traffic and travel conditions are available at 511.ky.gov. Check for adequate
tread and air pressure. The owner’s manual and a label inside the driver’s door list
the proper tire inflation level. Check fluid levels for the de-icer in the washer reservoir
and for antifreeze. Always keep the fuel tank two-thirds full. No one wants to get stranded
in frigid temperatures. Keep emergency supplies and tools on hand in the vehicle, such as
a shovel, ice scraper, flashlight and batteries and blankets. And drive carefully. Allow
plenty of time to get to your destination. Remember that bridges and exit and entrance
ramps can be icy when other areas are not. Share the road with snow plows. Be patient
and don’t pass the plow. If it’s safe, the plow will pull over and let you pass.
Be aware. A snow plow may create snow clouds which reduce visibility. And stay back. Give
the plow plenty of room to work. This has been your KYTC Minute. Visit transportation.ky.gov
