Well I chose Social Work after I tried many other
professions I wanted to be a biochemist and then I wanted to
be a journalist and then finally realized that I didn't want to work in isolation I
really like working with people
and I like to see people growing and changing
and I kind of stumbled into into Social Work cause I needed to transfer
from community college so I'm a first-generation college student my
parents are working class they didn't
even finish middle school in my family was very
strict about I was going to school so they were
really sacrificing a lot for us to be able to go to school so
social work for me has been very transformative because
one of the things that you learn is that as you helping others
and in in assisting others you are helping yourself and you are transforming
yourself so
I feel that you if I can contribute to improve
you know the conditions in this country i think is important because somebody
has to do the work and I think it been others seen as being
role models I have people who have mentored me and continue to mentor me today
that truly believe in the power of coming together as people
I think nobody will do it for us and I think the message
for my students is that we cannot do it for others either you have to work together
and we have to work for ourselves.
so at the end of the day day my contribution and in my decision to do
social work has to do with the ability to believe that people has
their own ability to change themselves and then transform the community so
I think in essence my value is that we can we can change our conditions its just a matter of
coming together
and helping one another
