My name is Ken and I'm from rooftwins.com. I happen to be in Potomac Falls for a roof
repair and a gutter repair and the problem that the homeowner is having is, the gutter
is at its highest point here, and the gutter gradually slopes downwards and drains towards
a downspout at the back of the house. This gutter is 40 feet long, so it can't handle
the water flow correctly and it overflows at this point here.
So, the homeowner explained to the original contractor what was going on, and the contractor
said that he would re-pitch the gutter and install a downspout towards the front of the
house. While they did install a downspout, but they never re-pitched the gutter. They
left it the same as it was before. This is the highest point, so this downspout serves
absolutely no purpose at all.
So, what we need to do to correct this problem is loosen up the entire gutter, make the middle
of the gutter here the highest point, and gradually slope it down towards the back of
the house so it could drain properly, and drop this down so that the water will drain
to the downspout. Once that is done, then this homeowner in Potomac Falls will not have
anymore problems with their gutters overflowing.
They also have another problem with a ridge vent, and the whole thing is coming up. As
you could see right here, it's all coming up, and I'll zoom in on that a little bit
more so you can get a better idea of what's going on. As you could see, the ridge vent
is all lifted up and the nails are exposed in several different areas. It's sitting up
about two and a half inches high off the roof.
So whenever you have driving rains being blown from either side of the house, the water goes
underneath the ridge vent, goes underneath the shingles and is causing leakage to this
Potomac Falls homeowner. So what we need to do is remove the entire length of ridge vent,
replace all the shingles that are damaged. Once the shingles are replaced, we then apply
a Geocel Tri-polymer sealant to the peak of the roof, and then we'll embed a different
type of ridge vent.
The kind that we're going to use is aluminum ridge vent. So what we'll do is embed the
ridge vent into the sealant, and then fasten the ridge vent every 16 to 24 inches into
the rafters and then seal all the exposed nails with the Geocel Tripolymer sealant.
Once that is completed, then this homeowner will not need anymore roof repair work due
to a loose ridge vent.
The reason why this ridge vent became loose in the first place is because - woo, let me
zoom out of this - they used inch and a quarter roofing nails here for the cap shingles, and then this longer
nail here is an inch and a half length nail. The inch and a half inch roofing nails, those
are the ones that they used to fasten into the plywood. But it just went into the plywood
just a little bit.
What they should have used is a long roofing nail here, two and a half inches long, and
that would be used to fasten into the plywood and into the rafters. If they had done this,
then this Potomac Falls homeowner never would have needed roof repair to their ridge vent.
