The Valencian International University has awarded the surgeon Pedro Cavadas
with the institution’s highest honour: an honorary doctorate.
This was in recognition of his important scientific and humanitarian contribution
to the fields of replantation surgery and reconstructive microsurgery.
The ceremony conferring the Valencian surgeon with his honorary doctorate
took place in the auditorium of La Fe Hospital in Valencia.
Also attending was the Councillor for Education
and many eminent professionals from the world of medicine and culture.
Psychobiology Professor Vicente Simón gave the laudatory speech
and highlighted the surgeon’s innovation in the field of reconstructive surgery,
his unrelenting pace of work and his deep desire to solve patients’ problems.
Doctor Cavadas carries out 1,800 operations on average per year.
Some of them are pioneering and extremely complicated,
such as the world’s first face, jaw and tongue transplant in 2009.
The Rector of the VIU, Juan Manuel Badenas, presented the emblematic elements
which confirm the awarding of the doctor’s new academic merits.
He gave the university’s support to the vulnerable groups in Africa
that Dr. Cavadas works with, to enable them to receive free education
through access to the technology platform.
They can now get the chance, thanks to the VIU’s technology platform,
in a similar way to the work done by the Cavadas Foundation,
to receive free access to any of the courses on offer at the university.
The new honorary doctor reiterated the need to work hard and excel
and he encouraged students to fight to meet objectives which benefit everyone.
They are not on an upward trend, but they should be.
Hard work and excellence have never been really encouraged…,
and this is exactly why we should foster them.
The current rising trends are actually the complete opposite.
We must encourage excellence, hard work and effort.
We already knew this of Dr. Cavadas because we know all about his career...,
and it’s been confirmed by what he has stressed again today.
We are very honoured to have him with us at the VIU.
The VIU has been very wise in this, as one of its main roles...
is to promote university excellence in the Valencian region
through the use of new technology and the Internet.
Here we have achieved it.
Pedro Cavadas is the second person to receive an honorary degree.
The first was the North American philosopher, Carl Mitcham.
