Broaden your impact
The Disability Disciplines Doctoral Program has five specializations
Special Education
Applied Behavior Analysis with individuals with disabilities
Rehabilitation Counseling
Disability Studies and Speech and Language Pathology
These five specializations make our program unique in that students gain
a multi-disciplinary experience in many of their courses.
People will need to be trained at the Ph.D. level
that reflects this cross-disabily movement.
So why become a university professor?
As a professor you can have a very broad and intense impact.
Are you ready to take your career to the next level and broaden the impact you have
on the education and services provided for people with disabilities?
The Disability Disciplines Doctoral Program at Utah State University provides opportunities to
connect, build
influence, support, explore and engage in research and teaching that has broad impact.
At Utah State University you will connect with our renown and faculty
who are committed to seeing you succeed.
In our Disability Disciplines Ph.D. program we work closely with each student.
It has been so helpful
to be able too
go and talk to a faculty member.
What I love about the opportunity to
form friendships with the colleagues here
is that i know when i get out in the field I can still collaborate with them.
In the Disability Disciplines program
we have lots of experience working closely with faculty.
They have an open-door policy.
They're really busy and you can get involved in
whatever projects you want to get involved with.
What's been important is to broaden my impact
and taking what I've learned as a practicing
counselor and bring it to the classroom.
What is unique about this program is the multi-disciplinary aspect.
I loved, I've thoroughly loved
the opportunities I've had to work with other students.
And have
a chance to talk about research opportunities with them.
And see how
the connections can be made from their program
into my program and look at it in a whole new way.
Our curriculum will ensure that you build the skill sets needed to become an
effective teacher and researcher.
In the Disability Disciplines program
the faculty are very active in developing new projects, new research,
and college teaching.
And that includes both Special Education as well as Rehabilitation Counseling
and other areas.
When somebody
enters into the Disability Disciplines Doctoral Program and has that goal of
becoming university professor
there's two
aspects of that job that will help them to broaden their impact and to be able to influence
their profession.
The first of those is
developing and empirically validated new interventions.
The second skillset that is developed
is in the training of new personnel.
When I'm teaching
here at a university or at any university
my goal was to be able to share with
these future speech language pathologists
how to integrate the evidence, how to read the research, and how to integrate it
into their practice. Which is crucial so that know your actually being
an effective speech language pathologist, you're doing things that have been proven,
or at least have evidence that they're effective.
In addition the overall effectiveness of our professional practice
we need to look at how they might affect those from different groups,
those from various cultures,
those with different language backgrounds,
and those with different disabilities.
We provide excellent financial support to qualified students.
The funding that we receive here
allows me to focus on the program itself,
and it also means that i don't have to have huge student loans when I leave.
i've been able to go to two different conferences already; and this is just
my very first year. And it's really facilitated
me being able to be here. I have a family, I have children,
and without it, it would have been next to impossible, so it's remarkable funding.
The funding that I've received, it's very competitive,
as well the opportunity to go to conferences so I can establish even more connections
with the other faculty in the field.
And I wouldn't have had that
if I didn't have an opportunity to go to those conferences.
USU provides you with more than a quality education;
it offers you a beautiful campus, nestled against the mountains with
recreational and cultural activities for you to explore.
I've really enjoyed Cache Valley, Logan area; there are tons of opportunities for outdoor
activities in the summer there's biking, and hiking,
and it's really a beautiful place.
USU's program will provide you with many opportunities
to engage in research, teaching and supervision.
i have been able to collaborate in developing a preschool
for children with autism
which has had an immediate positive impact on the community
I've also been able to conduct research at the preschool, which hasresulted in
numerous publications for both faculty and other doctoral students.
Well i guess the main point
is faculty that are involved with the Disability Disciplines Doctoral Program
have impact on the community in a lot of different ways.
The Disability Disciplines Doctoral Program is unique
in that the breadth of opportunities in the community
is larger than a lot of other programs. Students will have a great
opportunity here
to be exposed to a number of different community-based
applied research opportunities.
This program is nationally known
for producing well-rounded graduates prepared to competently step into
conventional and distance education classrooms.
i thought wouldn't it be great
to help other teachers learn effective practices
and make it easier for teachers and help students be more successful,
because i felt that the way i had been taught made my job easier at Utah State.
I was going to have a lot of opportunities
to become a really successful
university professor.
Initially, before i came here, I was a classroom teacher, and then I could impact
the number of kids who were in front of me.
But at Utah State University, as a teacher-trainer,
each year I'm producing
thirty to forty five new teachers who can have a significant impact
on all of their students every year.
And so the multiplication is huge, with the impact I can have.
I think that Ph.D. program, especially
of the Disability Disciplines is different; that the student can choose
his or her own topic,
can happen integrated line of inquiry throughout his or her entire program,
and end up making a contribution,
and end up with an identity of being a researcher and a writer,
and as somebody who contributes to the field.
it's one thing to fill
the job openings
for professors in Special Education;
but what's very, very important is to fill those job openings with people who can
have an impact;
through doing
very high quality teacher training and very high quality and practical research.
So apply to the Disability Disciplines program,
whether your specialization is Speech Language Pathology,
Rehabilitation Counseling, Special Education,
Applied Behavior Analysis or
Disability Studies.
This program will broaden your impact.
