Hi. This is Yvonne Chow from the Blade Dance Academy in New York City. In this clip we're
going to show you how to learn hip hop dance moves. So what you want to do when you're
learning dance is make sure that you understand that you always have to get it into your mind
before it comes out onto your body. So you always want to envision yourself doing it
before it comes out on your body. Also, you want to make sure that you always look at
the base, what the base is doing, before you look at what the upper body is doing. For
example, if you have a simple move that's a step touch and the choreographer is putting
arms with it and you don't understand the arms. All you want to do is take a look at
the feet and say "okay, what are the feet doing?" It's stepping together and then stepping
back out, stepping together, stepping back out. So you want to keep thinking about the
feet and you want to naturalize that in your body to the point where you don't have to
think anymore about what your feet are doing. Then once you have that section you go to
the arms and you ask what are the arms doing? Then you bring the arms in. Left, right, left,
and also you want to verbalize to yourself. So you could say right arm, left arm, right
arm, left arm. All these things are going to give cues to your brain so that your body
then knows what it's going to do. This is Yvonne Chow and this has been how to learn
hip hop dance moves.
