how nice of you to join the in today's video
on removing the duplicate items within the open with menu option
for example i have this text edit file on my
desktop, when i right click it allows me to open the file
with a variety of applications
after a while this list may become corrupted
and there may be duplicate items within this list
the irony is I have used this command so I don't have the duplicate items
we can get rid of this with a simple terminal command
to run this command we need to open terminal locations in your applications
utilities folder
when the app opens copy and paste the command which I have left in the comments
and press enter
its going to take a while, but it is going to kill the launch
services framework this is the file that controls this menu item
clear it out and restart it
once you have press enter
you need to write killall Finder
what this does, is restarts Finder and rebuilds the list
now with a bit of luck
this open with menu item will be reset
its that simple
now there's a small downside in that sometimes
in that Finder will tell you that you are opening an application for the first time
what you have to do it press OK
once you've done it once that message won't come up again
having duplicate menu items is a little annoying
however, this command is relatively good at clearing them
i have only had to do it once or twice within the lif time of my mac
if you do find you have then
run the command and everything will be back to normal
