The UK faces a massive challenge to reduce its emissions by 80% by 2050
and ensure the lights stay on.
To achieve these goals
we'll need to transform the way we power our society.
But how exactly should we do that?
To help answer that question, DECC is hosting this online debate
to have an energy-literate, grown-up conversation
about the UK's options to 2050,
putting all the options on the table
including all the different supply-side sources
and all the ways of transforming energy demand,
including technology switches and lifestyle choices.
A wide range of leading climate and energy experts
from industry, academia, environment groups and the media
have kindly agreed to present their views
of how the UK can meet its challenge.
They have used the DECC 2050 calculator
to produce their own pathways,
which you can view on this website.
On Thursday 3 and Friday 4 March, our experts will debate
the similarities and differences in their pathways.
Members of the public will be able to watch this debate unfold.
Then, from Saturday 5 to Tuesday 8,
the debating forum will be open to everyone.
Finally, on Wednesday 9 March,
the debating forum will focus again on our experts,
who will have a chance to reflect on the discussion.
I hope you will join in this debate,
and I look forward to seeing what we all learn from one another
on how to tackle the 2050 challenge.
