Happy New Year CVGers and welcome to the first news round-up of 2013. Christmas may be dead,
but it's not all bad: the months ahead look set to bring us GTA 5, Bioshock Infinite and
maybe even a new console or two. LET'S NEWS.
And we start with some sad news, and it's truly the end of the line for former publishing
giant THQ. The company is to be stripped of its assets in a major IP auction, with other
publishers bidding on gaming franchises like Homefront, Saints Row and Darksiders. The
likelihood is that THQ will also have to sell off their studios, and EA, Warner Bros and
Ubisoft have all expressed an interest. Let us know which franchise you'd bid on, and
who you'd like to see continuing your favourite THQ titles.
The Consumer Electronics Show is taking place this week, and it's seen a stack of game related
news. Sony has unveiled the mega TV we talked about months ago, a 4k OLED TV with a screen
resolution roughly equivalent to the surface of the Sun. This insano-resolution could have
an effect on the physical medium games are distributed on due to high data demands, but
SOny CEO Kaz Hirai they're focussing on digital distribution. Start looking for that fibre-optic
broadband deal now, peeps.
In more WTF news, Nvidia also revealed an Android-powered handheld device called Shield.
It looks like an original Xbox controller with a telly on the top, but the massive battery
life and potential for on-the-go Steam access fills us with cautious optimism. Any comments
about Jaguars, 3DOs or the Virtual Boy will be deleted immediately.
And our final bit of CES news is about the Steam Box, Valve's first foray into the world
of hardware manufacture. The Rumour Mill this week has all the details you could ever need,
and you can watch it by clicking here. Also on the channel this week, we've got a stack
of DmC videos - because you know how much you all love new Dante! - and GTA 5 o'clock
is back, breaking down the latest batch of news and screenshots. Finally, if you missed
it over Christmas, you can still watch Olaf's Christmas Special. Hit that subscribe button
now, because Olaf will return in 2013. l
Right let's have some more weirdness! Microsoft have come up with a gaming projection system
intented to augment your gaming experience, and it's called - wait for it - IllumiRoom!
A video shows the Kinect enabled device pretending to scan a room, before filling your walls
with fire, bright colours and wobbly shelves. Is it rubbish? We're not sure. Sony's answer
appeared to be a man, in a box, accosted by people in gimp suits, who's pretended to fly
an imaginary plane. Now for our own interactive concept. The Halloumi-room, which fills your
living room with delicious salty cheese, it's still in the development stage.
Some new games new now, and the voice behind Fallout 3's ThreeDog let slip on Twitter this
week that a sequel to the dusty apocalypse 'em up might be on the way. Erik Todd Dellums
- which is a name we really like saying - was apparently given permission by Bethesda to
tease some new Fallout content, whether it be a new game - hooray! - or the film.
And continuing with the new stuff theme, a fresh Pokemon title was also announced this
week. X & Y is the first game made especially for the 3DS, and it features an all new cast
of genetic chimeras doing battle for gym badges and animal imprisonment. The spiffy trailer
hinted at character customisation, some light platforming action and burning ducks. Basically,
everything we could want from Pokemon and more.
Let's finish on free stuff! Microsoft are giving away lovely points for anyone that
tries out NowTV, yet another streaming video service that offers on-demand movies in line
with what's currently being shown on Sky. Agree to a free 30-day trial and you bag yourself
800 points - enough to buy yourself Pool Nation, or two copies of Fighting Vipers, or a selection
of imaginary t-shirts! - and if you sign up for a second month then you get double - enought
to buy Minecraft, so you can join us online in our quest to build a blocky frigate. I
SAID FRIGATE.
Well that's your lot for this week, but hit subscribe now for the first news and gameplay
from all of 2013's biggest titles. Please remember to rate and comment, and we'll see
you again next week.
