Instagram, you better watch your back!
Hi there, I'm Roberto. Hope you guys are doing well.
In my last video I talked about my addiction to social media.
Well, last week I discovered a new social network called Mobli and decided to try it.
What is Mobli? How can I best describe Mobli?
Hmm, let's see. Take everything people love about Instagram
and... how do I put this? Borrow it?
Have a look at everything Instagram is doing wrong and do it right.
Add a few unique features and the end result is Mobli.
Now let's go through each of these items. They really took cues from things people love
about Instagram, like the filters and the double-tap to Like photos.
And what things Instagram is doing wrong that Mobli decided to do right?
Hmm, let's see. Mobli has a desktop website and it has almost
all of the features you will find in the mobile app.
You can even upload photos or videos from there.
When you post something to Mobli and then you want to share it to Twitter, they show
the actual photo in the Twitter cards, unlike Instagram who decided to block their media
so it won't show in Twitter. You are not constricted by the square photos.
Mobli uploads your photos without you having to crop them, so you have all the full width
or height of the photo. And 30-second videos?
Well no, Mobli doesn't limit your recording time.
You can also delete your comments from the mobile app, something that you can't do with
Instagram. I've always found quite ironic that you have
to go to Instagram's desktop website if you want to delete your comments, considering
all the things that you can't do on their desktop website like, I don't know, uploading
photos or videos, or changing your profile picture.
And what stuff they added on their own? You can comment on people's posts, not only
by just typing text but you can also add photos or videos to your comments.
They provide a local feed where, based on your location, will show you pictures and
videos others are taking near you. So you can have a look at what's going on
in your surroundings without you having to go out!
Okay, that part might not be so social. But hey, maybe you can get ideas and actually
go out and do something. Mobli also shows you how many people have
viewed your posts, not just how many have liked them.
Because it could happen, some people can watch your video or view your photo and not comment
or like it. I don't know; it's a possibility.
I think it has happened on some other websites. Now, there are Mobli applications for iOS,
Android and Windows Phone. And I had a look at the Android application
because, well that's what I have. And I have to say, the service looks promising
and the app is quite useful, but there are some issues.
For starters, I was not able to upload my profile photo from the app, I had to use the
desktop website. As for a cover photo, yes you can upload a
cover photo from the mobile app, but you won't see the update right away; you might think
it didn't work. You have to close the app and then open it
again, and then you will see the updated photo. Kind of annoying if you ask me but at least
there's a workaround. Also they have this feature where they can
compile a special photo you can use to promote your Mobli profile in other social networks.
I think that's kind of going to McDonalds and hand out fliers for Burger King but hey,
the feature is there and I tried to use it, and it didn't work!
Every time I try to use that feature, the app stops responding.
Another thing I found out lacking, they kind of dropped the ball on this, you can direct
message other Mobli users but you can only use text in those messages.
I tried to DM someone including a picture and I couldn't find a way to do it.
But my experience with Mobli has been mostly positive.
Will it dethrone Instagram? Probably not.
I think they need a lot of more users and hope that Facebook doesn't sue them.
Yeah, that could happen in these times we are living.
But what about you? Did you know about Mobli?
Have you tried it? Please let me know what you think in the comments
below. Also, the link to my Mobli profile is in the
doobly-doo below the Like button, and you can follow me if you are already there.
Shameless plug, I know. Thank you for watching.
