Well, hi everybody and welcome back to video number 2 in our new features
in Moodle 2.5 here at HSU! We're continuing in the course called
Video Base One, we have our editing turned on,
and we're looking in the left-hand block titled Administration.
We used to call it Settings but it just didn't sound official.
Actually Moodle did that. We're coming down to where it says
edit settings - little gear symbol - and we're going to click it.
You're going to notice something different here, and you'll see this
change
in a number of areas as you work through Moodle.
This is a response to faculty input - people got tired
of scrolling down an extensive page of options
and if you scroll down a little bit here, you'll see course format, appearance, file and
uploads
are all an option. Now if you like it
the old way or you're a new user to Moodle,
come to the upper right hand corner, and there it says
expand all. Give it a click and as my
son likes to say "you can kick it old school" - scrolling up and down, you see
there's all your friendly familiar choices
with one notable exception. Let's come up to the top
there it says general. We see our course title,
we see a date, and in between, here
is where you make your courses visible. It's no longer two-thirds of the way down
the page,
it's right here at the top and it shows up automatically,
you don't have to go hunting for it, so you can show
or hide your course right here at the top.
Once you get familiar with the features you like to use,
collapse it and everything's gonna go away.
I generally choose to have general and
description showing, and I simply click the little triangle
for those two options to appear. Notice
you can drag-and-drop into this section and you come to the very bottom
and choose save changes, just like you always used to do.
Okay, let's come over to the
Add an activity or resource. Let's choose
that item, add an activity and notice there are some changes
within the options for activities.
We have the advanced forum - that was with us last semester, it's still here -
and it makes grading students assignments much easier.
We have assignments, the attendance, the third item down
is the one most commonly used, the attendance
register, quite frankly is not getting a lotta love, there's your Blackboard
collaborate,
checklist is new, external tools,
and as we're moving down, there, under survey and above wiki is where it says
Turnitin. If you're going to use Turnitin in connection with Moodle,
you're going to want to create your assignment in this block.
We'll have a full demonstration this feature in the
grades and grading, as well as in the assignments section.
Please check the main page and look for that particular area,
if it's have specific interest to you. Coming down into resources,
its everything you've seen before, nothing really,
really new. I do wanna click the Turnitin
assignment and choose Add and we'll
give just a quick peek at that. Notice you have an assignment name,
summary, whether or not you want to display the description
on the course page, types of assignments,
a maximum size, generally these are going to be smaller -
you would not be uploading 500 megabytes in
a simple report. Will you accept late submissions?
How you wish this item checked... there's a lot of interesting things available,
and you can then expande the page in the upper
right-hand corner, just as we saw before and you can deal with grades, grade
category,
groups and the restrict access section.
Once you've created your assignment - I'm going to click cancel because we're not
filling this all in -
that assignment goes automatically to Turnitin
and you have an opportunity to have it checked
in accordance with the setup of that system. So,
we have new features, we have Turnitin,
we have changes to how
the course, assignment and forum information is presented,
and we have some new symbols - other than that, folks, it's pretty much
business as usual. Notice under the date
here at the top it says 19 November - there's the little
gear symbol for editing the summary - that used to be, again,
a hand holding a pencil. So, please check the specific area
for items that you are interested in - for example, if your
wanting to get your Gradebook set up would like to invite you to
first preview the Gradebook section and then come in and see us.
There are alternatives to Gradebook and remember these videos are
not meant to take the place of a complete
one-on-one training session - we'll have more on that
later in the videos. So, if you just can't wait to get started, stop by
Library 315,
Monday through Friday eight to five, and we are available
after hours if you need some special seminars or sessions
for your group or Department.
We'll see you soon!
