Hi I'm Chelsea, I am a physiotherapist at Gastown Physio and Pilates, as well as the
Women's Health and Pilates Manager. I am at the corner of Beatty and Dunsmuir right across
from The Yolks breakfast truck.
Today, I will be discussing a common injury during pregnancy, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Many changes and adaptations may occur in a woman's body during pregnancy. One of
which is this condition. This is typically a result of mild swelling which can occur
throughout this period
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is defined as the compression of the median nerve which runs through the
carpal tunnel of the wrist.
This condition usually results in numbness, tingling and pain into the hand of the affected
side. Other symptoms of CTS include: a weaker handgrip and reduced dexterity of the fingers,
swelling and increased temperature in the fingers, and an increase in symptoms when
you are moving your wrist.
As you can imagine, this condition can have a large impact on a mother's daily activities
once the baby arrives as she must lift, carry and breastfeed her child.
In order to manage this condition, it is important to understand how the position of your wrist
during certain activities may cause aggravation of your symptoms. If you seek Physical Therapy
treatment for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, your physiotherapist will design an individualized
program to improve circulation and decrease stiffness around your wrist joint as a result
of the swelling. Massage treatment as well as ice therapy or contrast baths may also
help relieve symptoms.
Typically the symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome will slowly disappear post-natally as the
swelling decreases. However the position of your wrist is still very important as you
care for your newborn. Ensure your wrist remains in a neutral alignment when you are lifting,
holding or breastfeeding your baby which means neither flexed nor extended. If you have any
questions about this condition please send me an email at chelsea@gastownwellness.com
Have a great day!
