First of all, I know I don’t – and I don’t imagine most writers do – know what the
next line is going to be. I rarely write a line preparing for the next line I want to
say. I just write the line that this character has to say, because that’s what he or she
has to say at that moment, which then has a reply or answer from someone else. But then
suddenly I find the scene starts to go off on a tangent that I had not thought of, and
I just let it go, because it leads to such an interesting thing, and it’s a little
bit the way people have conversations. You’re talking about one thing, but if you have a
problem on your mind, or the two of you do, and you get into a conversation, it’s rare
that you attack it right away. It’s rare that someone says, “Okay this is what I
want to say about you.” They lead up to it. They go through all sorts of different
roads and narrow lanes to get to finally what they want to say, which opens up to something
bigger, which opens up to something even bigger than that. And then they surprise themselves.
