Why do I have dandruff suddenly? I haven’t had this problem before, and now I look like
the before picture of a Head and Shoulders commercial.
Dandruff is usually caused by dry skin on your scalp. It could happen when you’re
skin is overly dry.
And I’m not putting hand lotion on my head. That makes sense.
Dandruff can be caused by oily skin, though. In that case, the scalp is red and greasy.
Would anyone but my hair stylist know that?
If you have that type of dandruff, you’ll usually have similar red, greasy skin on the
side of your nose, your armpits and anywhere else you have a lot of oil glands.
That makes me sound like an otter or a whale.
You could get dandruff from not washing your hair often enough. Then the skin builds up
until it starts flaking off.
If that’s the cause, why didn’t I notice it until now?
It has to build up to the point that it starts sloughing off.
OMG, that is disgusting! So my cure is wash my hair more often and with dry scalp shampoo.
And if the dry scalp shampoo makes it worse, like if you have the sebaceous type of dandruff,
switch to shampoo for oily hair.
At least all the solutions are in the hair care aisle.
In rare cases, dandruff is caused by fungus.
I didn’t know you could catch that black stuff growing in the shower. Wait, these are
all white flakes.
It’s not the same fungus. In other cases, the dandruff is a first sign of a skin condition
brought on by poor nutrition or a thyroid problem.
What do I do in those cases?
See a doctor.
Seeing a doctor for dandruff seems extreme.
Only go if all the hair care products fail to fix the problem.
Doctor, you’re my only hope! For my hair, and my social life.
