visited president no-man's in the bush there's still for a little bit here
where continue our conversation about
reform our nation gun laws which made some extremely credible steps this week
as a bill
requiring universal background checks finally went through a four-part formal
debate in the senate there was a vote for cloture
and of course
when that vote was man
here
is how harry reid responded
that's um...
well xy eight the nays are thirty one three-fifths of the senators duly chosen
and sworn having voted in the affirmative
the motion is agreed to
mistrust majority leader
appreciate everyone's cooperation
flailing clinton's legislation
course of those harry to a spring aside release there that they were able to get
cloture on the political course means of the bill then moves the floor of the
senate
forms of the
where they will there will be debate over amendments and then finally there
will be
another opportunity to vote on the bill itself and passion
um... and and at that point it will go into the house representatives uh... if
it does pass
joining us now is our congressional expert surely mitchell troy mitchell is
take action is editor in chief
long-time congressional reporter
charlie what did you make of of
of of this turn of events in the united states senate
well it's a pretty dramatic
packet they are preparing control of the senate or persons
something that
has a long been a bright line issue for republican state don't want the federal
government involved in this by and large with some exceptions but
the massacre of the horrible tragedy into town
to create a lot of momentum or our elected representatives
something
so they're going to do something but
there's still a great question of whether what they end up doing actually
has agreat practical effect so will will stay but this debate as you said
the big step it could happen this week is the debate got started in doubt they
will go into a process
of considering amendments and that process will
certainly go through the next two weeks and then in the senate takes a break as
they are want to do and it may resume inmate uh... this could go on for weeks
and weeks and weeks
sorely
you know the compromise the parent in the remove the objections of some key
republican senators who were considering filibustering
miss bill the mentioned to me compromise apparently would require some
modifications to a tighter universal background check all
water information are you hearing about that and how that could affect the
effectiveness of the ultimate legislation
well-paid basically limited the background checks there had been
there was a lot of support on the democratic side for a universal
background check and that's not what ended up in this compromise and the
compromise will be voted on early next week as an amendment and the expectation
is that will recieve the majority of these
it's limited it's um... it's if you go to biet cho an ad uh... etc on show for
example if you know your local convention center has a gun show or
whatever
there would have to be a background check if u
by garden bed um... into advertised in the newspaper or is advertised online
there would have to be a background check
private sales between individual citizens would not be checked into and
there are other things are kind of carved out of it
the reasoning for that daniel his that uh... critics were saying well
what if i did and on-call wants to give a call in to his nephew were whatever
does he have to go back roger corridor some really kind of extreme examples
that were trotted out there as the reason for not doing it but
at any rate in order to get this compromise through the the scope of it
had to be narrowed and and that's basically how they did it
wilson it's a fascinating debate in the sea as it develops
uh... some of the
interesting components of that their calls you what and weather
the and products will be even why it even more exceptions that we currently
have and and i think there's ever
wasn't expect
