As Corporate Videos become more prominent, industry professionals are required to present
themselves on camera as it provides a more a personal and direct form of communication.
How you tell a story, and how to look telling a story, are two components that are just
as important as the story itself. Your goal is to keep your audience engaged and to keep
their minds on your message. If done incorrectly, you can end up losing the interest of your
audience pretty quickly.
Firstly, it is incredibility important to maintain eye contact with the camera as this
automatically connects you with the viewer. It is essential to establish a personal relationship
with your audience.
Unless you are delivering some bad news, smile! It will make you look and feel more approachable
to your audience.
It's best to go with something simple, stylish and professional. You don't want to over do
it, so try to avoid outfits with busy prints or too many colors. It's important to look
good, but you don't want to distract your audience.
When on camera, clients have asked, "what do I do with my hands?. Good question. Think
about, what do you do with your hands when you are talking face to face with someone?
Don't leave them by your side the whole time, it'll look super unnatural and awkward, especially
if it's a medium shot. Use them to gesture, it will give your address more energy, but
again, don't over do it, movement is exaggerated on camera, and that can be quite distracting.
And don't mumble! Remember to enunciate your words. Make sure that the speed of your voice
is natural.
Avoid being monotonous. Remember to vary your voice and to be engaging. You may also want
to use a teleprompter to avoid any "ums" and "ahs" that might come along with speaking
freely.
And the last tip is to relax! The camera will not only pick up on your nervousness, but
it will emphasize it to your audience. Remember to breathe and just be yourself. When using
all these great tips, you will look and seem confident on camera.
