Music, fashion, magazines.
Every aspect of media nowadays seems to glorify the idea on an unachievable, unrealistic and scarily-thin society.
The average teenage girl in Rotorua, according to our survey, feels unhappy with their body image.
Everywhere we look, glamorous, stick-thin models are meant to represent ourselves, leading the majority
of the nation who are naturally shaped different and will never be able to achieve this look
to feel inadequate, which leads to unhealthy dieting, and illnesses such as anorexia and bulimia.
The question we have today is how the popular clothing store Supre contributes to this epidemic.
Coz like,
The people that work there are so skinny, and like
me not being that skinny, like, me going up to them and being like
-Oh, do you reckon this would look good on me?' or whatever like you know,
I just don't feel good about that.
(Lyrics) Pretty as a picture, sweeter than a swisher, mad 'cause I'm cuter than the girl that's wit-cha...
I'm Zoe Warena, I'm usually a size small or medium,
I think it is okay, except for the sizing because it has a bad impression
on people, especially young girls today.
In New Zealand, clothing stores are not required by law to correctly mark the sizings of their product.
For instance, a tee-shirt in Supre could be marked a medium, while in other stores it would be considered a small.
I'm Sina and I'm normally a size small or medium. I like some of the garments in Supre but not the style of the whole shop.
I think the Supre sizings are really inaccurate.
What I like about the store Supre is
the style. I like the colours etc, but I don't like the sizing because
not all kinds of girls can buy clothes there.
There's just
sizes like extra-small and small
and most of the girls who have
size medium
or also size large, they can't buy clothes there
because they're just small sizes.
And to top it all off,
the negative portrayal of Supre can easily be found in a Facebook search.
Typing Supre by itself is enough to bring up the popular group
"Have you ever been to a brothel? Nah, but I've been to Supre" while a bit more is needed to show the controversial
"Luring *** into your bedroom with a trail of Supre vouchers".
Funny, or offensive?
It's up to you to make up your minds,
but here at 60/60 we believe in a fair representation of the nation as a whole.
Not of the 0.1 percent of females who actually fit the requirements set by Supre's standards. I think I speak for everyone over a size 10
when I say you're providing an unrealistic, and demoralized
range of clothing that assaults our confidence and leaves us feeling like a hippo next to an amoeba.
So screw you, Supre.
(Lyrics) It's some kind of joke, I'm obsessively opposed to the typical.
All we care about is runway models, cadillacs and liquor bottles.
Give me something, I wanna be
Retro, glamour, Hollywood yes we live for the fame (FAME!), doing it for the fame (FAME!), 'cause we wanna live the life of the rich and famous..
Next week, join us as we explore the mysteries of life.
Children; small, or just far away?
