Pain specialist today I will be talking about cancer Pain
1 in 3 patients who is undergoing cancer treatment has
pain and many times if you or your loved one is diagnosed with cancer
the first thing that comes to mind is the patient will have a lot of suffering
and may have a very painful death today it is not so
having cancer does not always mean having cancer pain
you should not except pain as a normal part of having cancer
all cancer pain can be managed and
most of it can be well control even when the disease cannot be controlled
if you live with pain you will feel
tired, depressed you will have lack of energy
and when you treat this pain well you can get the best pain relief
once the pain as well control you will notice that you feel better
your hepatitis improves your energy levels improve and over all your response to pain
and cancer therapy improves now there are very good medications to control
this pain and risk of addiction is
very small people feel that the body gets used to the pain medicine
that is not so if you observed that you keep needing more and more
medication it could be because the disease is progressive
and some time some patients develop tolerance to the
medication why do patients in cancer get pain
it could be because of the disease itself when you have a tumor
The tumor presses on surrounding tissues
and this can cause compression of nerves, bones
and that can cause pain sometimes the disease may spread to distant areas like bones
and that can cause a lot of pain sometimes cancer treatment itself can cause pain
after radiation you may have ulcers in the mouth you may have burning
sensation in the skin
chemotherapy drugs are known to cause some nerve pains
after surgery pain is there for a short period of time
all this can be very well managed how can you treat cancer pain
first always is treatment of the tumor so whenever possible
surgery, radiation or chemotherapy for the cancer it is done
when the cancer is not curable you can still have a very good productive and
pain free life
we can use different types of pain medicines
which are called analgesic there are different type they are not the routine
painkillers that you get outside over the count this are different medicine which
are safe for long-term use
and do not cause much damage to liver and kidney
there are nerve blocks which can be done when a particular nerve is causing pain in the cancer
we block that nerve with local anesthetics on with other chemicals
and give you long-term pain relief for example if you have a rib metastasis
or a intercostal nerve block can be given
for gallbladder and pancreatic cancer there is something called celiac plexus block
which can be given
morphine is an excellent drug for cancer pain
and the risk in cancer patients is very low this is available in different
preparations and your doctor will decide which is best for you
there are immediate release preparations which give you relief or two to four hours and there are long
preparation which gives relief from 12 to 14 hours
there are also patches available for patients who are unable to swallow
who have a mouth ulcer or who has vomiting
so you should always go to a pain specialist if you have
pain more than 3 on 10 and there are complimentary
methods like yoga acupuncture and meditation
which can complement our pain therapy
