RON GOLD: I've been a fifth grade teacher...
this is my tenth year now.
So I teach reading, writing, math,
social studies and science.
The students go out for their specials, but other than that,
I get to work with a great crew of kids
throughout the entire day.
I wanted to do something with my life that invests
in my community and our world around us.
I also wanted to be a teacher
because I grew up knowing the importance of education
and wanted to make sure that every child,
no matter where they live or where they're from,
has an excellent teacher in front of them.
My school is a great place to teach
because we all understand that we're in it together.
And we really work hard at knowing that interdependence
that's going on.
That the kindergarten teacher knows that her successes
and my success are as much important to each other's.
I am a huge, huge user and fan of technology.
And so I always am using a smart board in my room.
The kids have tablets in the room.
We go to the computer lab a lot.
Trying to find ways to integrate technology as much as possible
to make the learning exciting for them.
Today's kids have books in their hands
as often as they often have technology.
And so I think that it's great
because they learn both methods of learning.
How I know that I've been successful
and how I know that my students have been successful
is when I come away from the front of the room
and I actually come and sit amongst the students
and actually become a partner in the learning.
It's really an amazing thing when I can sit back
in one of their seats and see the classroom
through their eyes.
Students come in with an unending imagination
and so an amazing educator works hard
and is dedicated to helping the students share and uncover that
within themselves.
