Hi everyone. I hope you enjoyed a great Mothers Day weekend..Abraham Lincoln once said: “ all
that I am or hope to be, I owe to my mother”…I think that’s a quote that resonates with
a lot of people.
last week’s Week in Review took us to Clayton in the Thousand Islands for our coverage from
the Empire State Tourism Conference. What a beautiful spot, and as New Chair of the
Senate Tourism Committee, I addressed the pros who work in tourism across
our state.
When it comes to tourism it doesn’t get much bigger than our annual Lilac Festival.
With over 500,000 visitors from around world expected to turn out over the 10 day event
it’s one of our best opportunities to show off all that our community has to offer, while
providing plenty of fun for those of us who live and work here too. Thanks to everyone
working at the Lilac Fest for throwing a great party in Highland Park, one of the most beautiful
backdrops anywhere.
The Legislature was back in full swing last week, in Albany had a chance to explore new
ways to grow more jobs and investment here in Monroe and Ontario counties at our Senate
Commerce, Economic Development, and Small Business Committee meeting on Tuesday. We
have everything we need to succeed in our own backyard. Now it’s time to take action
to get our community back to work.
The Senate also took action last week to make our roads safer for our pedestrians, bicyclists
and motorcyclists. That package of bills included one of mine, which would make our roads safer
by ensuring that anyone who hurts or kills someone while breaking a traffic law is truly
held accountable with stiffer penalties and a required safety course so we can make sure
it never happens again.
Finally, thank you to the young men and women from New York’s West Point Military Academy
for representing their school at the Senate’s annual West Point Day… and to the officers
from the New York State Correctional Officers Association for stopping by the office last
week. Whether it’s at home or abroad, I’m so grateful to all those who step up, put
service above self, and work to keep us safe every day. Thank you.
I hope you enjoy your week. I’m Rich Funke.
