Ok I’m gonna talk to you now a little bit about personal statement
So the personal statement is pert of the UCAS application
it’s the only section where you can have
free text comments, so it’s your opportunity
to stand out from the rest of the crowd.
Admissions tutors are gonna see 1000s and 1000s
of applications, so like I said it’s your chance
to stand out from the rest.
Now what I would suggest first of all is you need to think
about why you actually want to study that particular course
and that’s what the admission tutors are gonna be
looking out for. Not only that, they’re going to be
looking out for why you want to go to, and do that course
and you’re going to be an asset to their department.
I would suggest that you breakdown your statement
into 2 different sections, first of all think about
the academic experience that you’ve got and think about
your personal experience as well. So when you talk about
your academic experience, make sure that you think about
the different course that you’ve done relating
to your subject or maybe different work experience
that you’ve got, or maybe even different books
that you’ve read, they’ve been really interesting relating
to your choice of subject. Then think about your
personal experience, so think about what you do outside
the school or college, what things are involved with
do you do voluntary work? Or do you do things like
the Duke of Edinburgh or world challenge, things like that
that makes you stand out from the rest of the crowd.
But whenever you write something, make sure that
draw on an example, so the admission tutors got
something solid to look at. Just wanna give you also
a few tips for when you think about your personal statement
make sure that you draft it again, again and again to get it right
Ask maybe a parent or your friend to look over it
so they can check things like spelling mistakes and grammar
these are really simple things, but they make a different
when the admission tutors are actually looking at
the personal statement. Another really important things
is to make sure that you don’t lie or embellish any
of the truth in your personal statement and maybe
that you called up for an interview at a particular University
you’d then have to explain more about what you’ve
written on your personal statement.
So it’s really important that you do write everything
that you’ve done is actually truth, and also make sure
that don’t copy anybody else’s personal statement
The reason why it’s called personal statement is because
it’s personal to you and there’s lots of plagiarism detective software
that UCAS use, so you can be caught out, so make sure
that everything that you’ve put on your statement is
about you and it’s the truth.
Also I would suggest you save a copy of your
personal statement as well, so just in case you’re
called out for an interview, then you will have that
to look back on what you’ve actually put on your statement
If you want any further information about doing
the UCAS application or a personal statement
I suggest you look at UCAS website, there’re loads
of information about writing personal statements and
different things that you need to consider, so
I really suggest that you go and have a look at that
and then start writing your personal statement.
