[TEXT: John Koenig U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus]
Hello, I’m John Koenig, the new U.S. Ambassador to Cyprus.
My family and I share wonderful memories of our last tour in Cyprus.
Our sons, Ted and Alex, both started school in Nicosia and learned to swim in your crystal waters.
Now after 15 years away, my wife Natalie and I look forward to rediscovering your beautiful island.
I hope to revive my Greek and to learn Turkish.
My 28 year diplomatic career has taken me from Southeast Asia via Washington, Brussels, Berlin,
and Naples to the Eastern Mediterranean. Yet I never lost sight of your island.
My highest priority will be supporting the reunification of Cyprus as a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation.
As Ambassador, I will strive to help both communities heal divisions and build a common, prosperous future.
Tourists from around the world are touched by Cyprus’s natural beauty and unique cultural heritage.
I want to help preserve the ancient cities and historic sites of Cyprus for future generations.
I will also encourage more Americans to discover what is truly Aphrodite’s Isle.
Cyprus’ greatest wealth is its people. Natalie and I are eager to understand the diverse
perspectives of Cypriots in both communities and to make new friends.
Thank you and see you soon.
