Tone is the change from light to dark Cross-hatching is a drawing technique used
to create tone. Tone can make drawings look 3D.
3D shapes are called Forms.
Artists use cross-hatching to draw portraits. Look at this Albrecht Durer drawing, He used
cross-hatching, see how the marks don't just show wrinkles on the face but also where all
the different tones fall.
Here's Van Gogh's portrait, he also used dots to create tone.
And Rembrandt, notice how on this portrait the marks on the face look like fur from close
up but the further away you get the more it looks like the soft shadows on the skin.
And here David Hockney used cross-hatching on the left of the picture on the face to
show there's a strong light source coming in from the right.
Task
At the moment, this face looks a bit like an alien or a cartoon character cos its flat
and hasn't got any tone.
What we're going to do is add crosshatching to create tone to make the face look more
like a real face. By adding cross hatching we can make it look 3D. If you put cross-hatching
in the right places you'll create the illusion that the face is jumping off the page.
