So the medical definition of infertility is the inability to conceive after one
year of unprotected intercourse.
We recommend that couples be evaluated for infertility if the
female is less than thirty five years of age that they be evaluated after one
year of attempting to conceive.
If the female is over the age of thirty five, we recommend that they be evaluated
after six months of attempting to conceive.
At any point I think it's reasonable to request specialty care. Most ob/gyns
are capable of doing a basic evaluation for infertility treatment
but at that point either the evaluation hasn't shown anything
or if at that point it has shown something, it would be reasonable to
see a specialist for fertility treatments.
