Have you ever REALLY needed a book from the library and seen that someone else has it check out for the next month?!
Can’t wait for UW libraries to recall the book from the current borrower?
Don’t panic. UW Libraries belongs to a network of libraries called the Orbis Cascade Alliance,
which makes it possible for you to borrow books from 36 other Universities and colleges in Washington and Oregon.
That means when a book is checked out from UW Libraries, chances are- you can still get the book in under a week for FREE!
Say you need to check out the “The absolutely true diary of a part-time Indian” by Sherman Alexie for a class.
When you look for the book in UW WorldCat, all the UW copies are checked out.
Below the UW Libraries information on this book, there is a section called “Summit Libraries.”
You can now press the request item button in this section. Books typically take about 3 to 5 days to get to any UW Libraries location.
While requesting, you can choose your pickup location from any library on campus.
UW Libraries will send you an email when the book is ready for you to pick up.
You can typically borrow a Summit book for about 6 weeks and for specific kinds of media like DVDs, about 6 days.
But keep in mind, Summit materials are not renewable.
UW Libraries will send you an email 2 days before the Summit item is due back at the library.
You can return the book to any UW or Summit Library.
Sometimes Summit requests do not work because the item is not available for check-out from other libraries.
If UW Libraries does not already own the book you want, you can request the book through inter-library loan at http://.lib.washington.edu/ILL.
To check your Summit Account or to track your item's status, go to the "Your Library Account" page from the UW Libraries' homepage.
Click on "My Summit Account."
This will take you to a sign-in. Make sure you pick University of Washington as the name of your library.
This page lets you know what items you have requested, what the status of the items are and the items you have checked out.
Once a book is entered into the system at UW Libraries it will appear in your UW Library Account.
To cancel a Summit Hold, email the Summit Office at uwsummit@uw.edu.
Please include the request number, found on your Summit Account page and the title of the book.
