It's wrap up time after another successful job fair. Why are we bothering to take this
and talk to you about it? Because many of the things that I saw today during the seminars
for ClearedJobs.Net at their job fair are the things that are critical to you in any
job situation. First of that is the number of people, including
senior experienced people who are having trouble focusing. If you're looking for more that
one type of job, you need more than one resume, you need more than one explanation of what
you do. But you don't need to assume that you should put it all on one resume and the
hiring person just sorts it out. Because what they will do is they'll sort you out rather
than sorting out what you really want to do. The second thing that I saw lot of today was
the difficulty that people have translating their experiences into keywords, the terminology
that's really critical to them now. Whether you are coming out of the military, the federal
government, a big company, a long career in one area or you're just thinking of changing
jobs, it's still you're roll to make those connections, to make those translations. That's
a tough thing for all of us. It means you've got to go to the professional meetings, it
means you've got to be current on your professional reading, it means that you've got to be out
there networking like crazy to make sure that you get your resume to say the right things
about you in the terms that that hiring manager will recognize, understand and want to call
you to talk about. Big today was also a lot of concerns about
how do I know if the job is really open right now. And that's an easy one, ask. Ask when
they're hiring, ask whether this an existing position, a new position is being developed,
or they're pending a contract. And in all those cases ask when they expect the position
to be available. If you're looking for a job immediately you
have a different set of interests than someone looking for a job in three, six, nine months
when they retire, when they get back in the country, or whatever, so ask that question.
