Did you know? Jacksonville District, US Army Corps of Engineers Restoring America's Everglades.
Restoration and Recovery The world's scientists and environmentalists
are watching us. Largest ecosystem restoration project worldwide.
18,000 square miles (more than 2x size of New Jersey) restoring ecological function
of 2.4+ million acres. Everglades restoration employs at least 5 different contractors.
Contracts = $118 million economic impact for FY 2012. President authorized $162.7 million
for Everglades restoration in Fiscal year 2012 budget.
How it all began... Past, historically, water flowed freely through south Florida. Present,
Devastating hurricanes required a way to control floods. Central and South Florida Flood Control
Project began in late 1940's. Most elaborate and effective water management system in the
world, restored, provided flood control, supplied water, prevented salt water intrusion, protected
fish and wild life. Supplied water for Everglades National Park. Central and South Florida contract
= $75.9 million economic impact for FY 2012. However there were unintended results... Lost
habitat, damage ecosystem, unnatural water flow. These impacts need to be corrected...
A success story: Kissimmee River Restoration, exceeding anticipated environmental results,
restoring 40 sq. miles of river floodplain ecosystem, restoring 20,000 acres of wetlands,
restoring 44 miles of river channel, employs 8 contractors and infuses $43 million into
the economy in Fiscal year 2012.
Project under construction. Modified water deliveries to Everglades National
Park: • Employs one contractor.
• Will infuse $82 million into the economy from 2010-2012
Tamiami Trail, Picayune strand, restoring 55,000 acres of wetland and upland habitat,
natural water flows across 85 sq. mile area, balancing plant communities, increasing aquifer
recharge, sending fresh water naturally to coastal estuaries.
Picayune Strand Restoration Project Merritt Canal Pump Station
$54 million contract
Picayune Strand Restoration Project Faka Union Pump Station
$79 million contract
More than 63,000 acres of Everglades National Park will see...
Improved hydrologic conditions..., more naturally functioning ridge and slough landscape...
and more favourable conditions for wildlife and native vegetation.
Site 1 Impoundment, 1660-acre reservoir provides ground water recharge, Reduces seepage, prevents
saltwater instruction, contracts = $44 million economic impact.
Melaleuca Eradication, Melaleuca is one of the most infamous invasives living in Florida
today. $1.6 million bug nursery will produce tens of thousands of insects to combat the
spread of Melaleuca.
Coming Soon...
