Labor migration has become a very important theme in today's world
affecting thousands of people.
According to statistics almost eleven thousand people have left Estonia
solely in year two thousand twelve, not surprisingly two-thirds of them
to Finland.
To get better understanding on the actual effects this phenomenon contains
we visited a conference on migration and demographic challenges held in
KUMU art museum in Tallinn Estonia.
We got the possibility to interview Lauri Bambus the undersecretary of
ministry of foreign affairs of Estonia
and asked his thoughts about the main reasons and effects of the people
following work our studies to other countries.
To find something better conditions
he's moving
and moving the towards let's say where might be better
salary or the living conditions or the social warranties etc.
We should not see only problems
and let's say negative aspects of migration.
And I personally a strong believer that it's really very good
when people are moving in the world.
In the conference it became clear that issue carries both pros and cons
in terms of national economy and culture.
Elli Heikkilä a research director of the institute of migration in Turku, Finland
talked to us about some of the effects migration has on the countries involved.
We asked whether the active immigration of Estonians somehow
influences Finnish native cultural atmosphere.
We could say that
Estonian people first of all they are invisible
immigrants. If you see a person
on the street
you don't recognize this is an immigrant background person.
We have so much connections. Finnish people are visiting here as a tourist
all the time
we have used to be together.
Estonian people are doing very well in the FInnish labor market so
this cultural closeness it is like we have similar value
value systems are the same and so on.
Having listened to the conference
as well as discussing the topic with experts, it is clear that the labor migration
isn't the issue people often consider to be but rather a change of nature in modern work market.
It's important that the people after studying after learning, experiences
will return back home
and be more wise and more experienced and
will be able to share
this what he or she gained abroad.
However an increased level of cooperation between the Nordic
and the Baltic countries
could be considered to provide and insure the beneficial position
in the economic market for both parties.
