In this lesson we will talk about the Present Continuous.
Hello. Today we’re going to talk about the Present Continuous.
The Present Continuous has different functions, doesn’t it?
Yes, that’s right, Lenny. One of these functions is to describe actions or events that are in progress the moment we speak.
Right now, for example, we’re talking about grammar
And how else can we use it?
It also describes future actions. Tomorrow, I’m having lunch with my brother.
And in May I’m traveling to San Francisco to visit my best friend.
You know, Present Continuous is also used to talk about temporary actions, or a change in routine.
Yes. In fact, this month I’m staying at my mom’s because they’re painting my apartment.
She probably can’t wait till you go back home.
Very funny.
Ha! I love your mom. Does she still go to the beach every afternoon to watch the sun set?
No. Now she’s going in the morning because she wants to see the sun rise. You know how she hates routine.
Yeah, I know. What a character! But now, let’s take a look at some dialogues using the Present Continuous.
Good idea.
Hey, what are you doing?
I’m cleaning my room. My mom is on my back.
I’m not doing anything. Do you want some help?
Sure. I’m trying to separate some clothes I don’t use anymore, for donation.
Where are you putting them?
In that box over there. Tomorrow, my aunt is taking them to an orphanage she knows.
Thanks for all your help, Floyd. What are you doing tonight?
Some friends and I are watching a movie at my place. Do you want to come?
What movie are you watching?
I don’t know. Evan is bringing the movie.
So, are you coming over later?
I don’t know. This week I’m studying for my finals.
Oh, please!! You’re studying on a Friday night? Who do you think you’re kidding?
No, really!! I’m growing!! I’m more mature…
Yeah, sure. I’m expecting you at 7pm. Bring the popcorn!!! I’m bringing the soda.
