Welcome, this video is the first step into "Preparing your course for Quality Matters review"
The first thing you can do to prepare your course for Quality Matters review is Customize your Orientation unit.
Customization can be done in five ways and will satisfy many Quality Matters standards.
These include: Creating a Course specific Orientation video.
OR Creating a text based Course specific Orientation
Using a Course scavenger hunt(s). Hosting a Collaborate session(s).
Participating in the Orientation discussion and
Posting your Instructor Contact Information.
Let's first look at Creating a Course specific Orientation Video. Videos create an effective
visual aid and are easy to make. The following example is from ENC 1102.
This video will point out specific components about how to navigate throughout the course.
In addition, the video meets Quality Matters standard 1.1 which States "Instructions make clear how
to get started and where to find various course components." Also it meets Standard 1.2 which
states "Students are introduced to the purpose and structure of the course."
Another way to demonstrate course navigation is through text. The example we will be using
is from the Quality Matters Recognized course AML 2020. The instructor used text in order
to cover the same materials as the video. This also meets Quality Matters standards 1.1 and 1.2.
Using a Course scavenger hunt is a useful tool to engage students into becoming familiar
with the course. An example of this is what CGS 1100 uses.
This test challenges students on important information for successful course completion.
Collaborate sessions are an interactive way to involve students in the course navigation.
Once again we will be using an example from AML 2020 our Quality Matters Recognized course.
Collaborate is a live web based session where you can talk with students and demonstrate
course materials with student participation. Also students can ask questions and receive
immediate feedback. For those students that could not attend, instructors can record and
post the link to the collaborate session.
Orientation discussion. The Orientation discussion is a place for students to learn more about
their fellow classmates. Instructors should participate in this discussion as well, so
students learn more about them. The following example is also from AML 2020.
As you can see in the Orientation discussion the instructor gave the students prompts to
talk about as well as a word count. The instructor also participated in the discussion. This
discussion board will meet QM standard 1.8, which states "Students are asked to introduce
themselves to the class."
All contact information for an instructor should be located on the home page as well
as in the Orientation Unit. The orientation Unit is a great place to introduce yourself
as well as list office hours and contact information. This information is also suggested to be posted
in your Syllabus, on the Home page as well as in your course documents.
Our example course is AML 2020
On AML 2020's home page the instructor provided name, and contact information. The instructor
even made a specific menu item where all the Instructor information is located. In addition
to the instructors name and contact information, this menu item also has office hours, an about
me section and the instructors roles. Also within this course's getting started, within
the discussion folder, there is convenient course link titled "instructor Info" when
this course link is clicked this link leads to the instructor's information page. If a
student clicks either the course link or the menu item they we be directed to the same
location with the same information.
This covers QM standard 1.7 which States "The self-introduction by the instructor is appropriate and available online."
This concludes your first step towards preparing your course for Quality Matters review. In this step you
learned ways to customize your Orientation unit. Remember, you have five ways to customize
your orientation unit that will satisfy many Quality Matters standards. These include:
Creating a Course specific Orientation Course video. OR
Creating a text based Course specific Orientation Using a Course scavenger hunt(s).
Hosting a Collaborate session(s). Participating in the Orientation discussion
and Posting your Instructor Contact Information.
All example material previously covered are located in the "Examples" folder. Also resources,
such as video tutorials and instructions for how to customize your Orientation Unit can
be found in the "Resource" folder as well.
