Hi everyone, my name's Kit, I am the project coordinator of In a Bind here at TransActive.
The In a Bind program is a binder exchange program. We gather
donations from people who no longer need their chest binders either because they got
top surgery or they changed size
or anything like that. And then we take applications through our website from trans*
youth ages twenty-one and under
who need a binder but are unable to get one. A lot of our youth are unable to get
binders either because
they don't have the money. A lot of them are kids still in school, they don't
have
jobs
or they're still living with their parents and their parents don't support their
trans identity
so
aren't allowing them
the opportunity to go out and buy binders for themselves. The response to In a
Bind has been enormous. The first day when i put the website up and we weren't
even ready to send out binders yet, we didn't have any donations in,
I just put up the website
with the application and the information about how to donate
and I put one post on Tumblr. Two hours later
we had
thirty-six applicants already. That was almost a year ago now, we started sending
out binders ten months ago
and in that time we have sent out two hundred forty binders to kids
throughout the country
and our current waitlist is almost thirteen hundred.
Which is
way bigger then i anticipated this would be within its first year of
existence.
In a Bind runs entirely with volunteers, nobody gets paid to work
at In a Bind, we only send out donations.
We don't have
grant money or anything coming in to buy binders, we can all be send out the
donations that gets sent to us. The biggest need we have right now for donations
is binders! We need
binders to fill these applicants' requests. We need binders in every size.
We have people
extra small all the way through, I think Underworks goes up to like a 3XL and
we have people every single one of those sizes on our waitlist right now. If you have a binder that
you want to donate, that you're not using any more
you can mail it to us. Our mailing address is
1631 NE Broadway St
it's box number 355-T
in Portland Oregon zipcode 97232.
Send it to In a Bind at that address. If you didn't catch it would put it in our
description. You can also go to our website, it's inabind.transactiveonline.org
and it has all the details
about how to donate. Also if you want to
buy us a new binder, if you don't have a binder to donate, you just want to
order one from the internet and have it mailed to us, we talk about that.
We also take cash donations
that help us cover the shipping costs of then mailing the donated binders
back out to the youth.
