Welcome back.
Now we're into the second element, which is DJing.
Now, to just help you a little bit understand what the word DJ means: DJ means disk jockey.
Okay, disk jockey is basically a person who plays disks on a turntable for all the people around him or her to enjoy.
Now, you may not know a little fact about this,
but back in Davenport on WOC AM 1420 was the very first commercial radio station west of the Mississippi River
who actually did DJing on the radio.
And that was a long, long time ago.
This time was actually the first person did it, the disk jockey, was actually President Reagan was the first disk jockey.
Many people don't know that, but the meaning of disk jockey is the person who plays different types of tracks
for your entertainment so that you can listen to different sounds, different beats, different melodies to enjoy.
Now, usually when a disk jockey performs, there's a certain element that he uses or, should I say, equipment that he uses,
which basically are two turntables, a mixer and, of course, the output system.
Now, this picture here is more of a new age kind of DJ system, okay?
Usually back in the days, it was just a big set with power amps and big, giant speakers.
The bigger the speakers, the bigger the power amps, the bigger the push of power and music.
And we have a few DJs that were synonymous to teaching us about the disk jockey.
One of them, my favorite, Grandmaster Flash. You may have heard of him.
Way back when, Grandmaster Flash had done many wonderful things with disk jockey music.
Basically he was the one who also created the scratch by turning the turntable back from the needle,
jumping back and forth through the needle until it made a sound which they call scratch nowadays.
Which another gentleman that I'm very proud to talk about is D.J. Jazzy Jeff,
a very talented disk jockey, or D.J., who took scratching to a whole new level.
Now, usually a DJ is equipped with headphones that help him listen to the tracks he's playing for you,
so that he makes the music jumble together with the sounds.
So, you hear a melody from one side that blends in with another sound to cover it to make a beautiful sound combined as one.
So basically, in short form terms, a DJ is basically someone who mixes music and sound
and elements of sound together to produce a beautiful sound that comes out of the speakers.
Do you understand? Good.
Until the next segment, where we'll go into a little bit more detail about breakdancing.
Until then.
