Today, February 6, is New Zealand’s National Day. Known also by the indigenous Maori name
of Aotearoa, meaning “Land of the Long White Cloud,” New Zealand is home to a diversity
of natural beauty. Amazing caves, glacier lakes, valleys, fjords, sandy beaches, and
snow-capped peaks are among the country’s many outstanding features. The New Zealand
Sub-Antarctic Islands is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
World Heritage Site. They have a high level of biodiversity and are habitat for 126 species
of birds. Famous New Zealanders include acclaimed writer Ms. Janet Frame, distinguished lyric
soprano Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, and prominent artist Mr. Colin McCahon.
We wish the kind-hearted New Zealanders an auspicious National Day.
