- [Voiceover] Grass Land Jam
recorded during the annual Minnesota Bluegrass
and Old Time Music Festival at El Rancho Manana
near Richmond, Minnesota.
(banjo music)
Grass Land Jam showcases
the main stage performances
presented during the four day festival
by regional and national bands.
Now from the main stage,
Sawtooth Bluegrass.
(upbeat bluegrass)
She lived out on the edge
Of a neighboring county
By that old oak tree
You know what I mean
I used to sneak out late
And follow the river downstream
Unseen on my way to see my Mississippi queen
We hold on
To our first love
And when it's gone
It's never enough
Lookin' back
I know now that the best days of my life
Were shared with the river and you
(fiddle solo)
I can see the moon shining
When I look into your eyes
And it's deep and dark as the river is at night
Oh a perfect summer night
I saw a breeze blow on by
In my colorful life
Baby you were my light
We hold on
To our first love
And when it's gone
It's never enough
Lookin' back
I know now that the best days of my life
Were shared with the river and you
(fiddle solo)
I can't help but think
How things might have been
If it were you and me
Instead of you and him
We hold on
To our first love
And when it's gone
It's never enough
Lookin' back
I know now that the best days of my life
Were shared with the river and you
Oh the best days of my life
I shared with the river and you
(audience applauds)
- [Jesse] Thank you.
I used to call her up
Pick her up in my own truck
Take her to the movies
Or dancing at the ferry club
Back when we were holdin' hands
Taking long walks on the sand
And she told me
That I would always be her man
Where do we go
From seeing where we're headed
To seeing other people
Is it something she wished
Or a page that I missed
'Cause she's already on the sequel
Did I step out of time
Or fall out of line
From a dance off I never heard of
We fed that fire
Until we thought it burned up
Blame it on the here
Blame it on the now
Blame it on the he said she said
Don't know how
Just don't blame it on me
(guitar solo)
(fiddle solo)
(mandolin solo)
Sometimes you need to feel a little pain
To know how good you had it
But there's a lot of pain now
Then I had it really good
Or was I just an addict
I've always had a flair for the dramatic
I remember when we used to go at it
But I'm done acting now
That's all I've had it
Blame it on the here
Blame it on the now
Blame it on the he said she said
Don't know how
Just don't blame it on me
Just don't blame it on me
(audience applauds)
- Thank you.
All right.
I wanna tell you about our guitar player now.
He's one of the Birtzer brothers,
and he is an award-winning guitar player,
ladies and gentlemen,
he is the the three time Minnesota state
flatpicking guitar champion, which is--
(cheering) Yeah!
All right well,
why don't you sing a song for us, Clint?
One that you wrote.
What's that one about uh--
- The thing?
- About the thing, what's that called?
- Take me away.
- Yeah, let's do that one.
Out where the rivers run
Where they're soft and gently
Life's a little slower there
I can just do what I please
Leave your cares at the door
No need for them out here
Sit back take a seat
Let Mother Nature steer
Oh oh take me away
That cold northern breeze
Lights a fire in my soul
No place I'd rather be
Than on these rocky shores
Don't know where I'm bound
Just know I've got to go
A different place every night
To lay my weary bones
Oh oh take me away
Oh
Where I can find some peace of mind
And just keep wasting time
Take me away
(guitar solo)
Clouds are rolling in
It's gonna rain tonight
Sitting watching those shadows dance
In that firelight
Whiskey's running
Like a grown man to his knees
It makes the mind run like an afternoon breeze
(tempo slows)
Oh oh take me away
Oh
Where I can find some peace of mind
And just keep wasting time
Take me away
Don't know where I'm bound
Just know I've got to go
(audience applauds)
- [Voiceover] Up next,
The Roe Family Singers.
He will know where I am sleepin'
And perhaps he'll think of me
My heart is sad and now so lonesome
For the only one I love
When will I see him
Maybe never
'Til we meet in Heav'n above
Bury me beneath the willow
Under the weepin' willow tree
He will know where I am sleepin'
And perhaps he'll think of me
(fiddle solo)
He told me that he really loved me
How could I believe it true
Until a neighbor saw Bill whisper
He has proven untrue you
Bury me beneath the willow
Under the weepin' willow tree
He will know where I am sleepin'
And perhaps he'll think of me
Tomorrow is our wedding day
Oh Lord oh where can he be
He's over talking to another
And he cares no more for me
Bury me beneath the willow
Under the weepin' willow tree
He will know where I am sleepin'
And perhaps he'll think of me
- [Kim] Thank you.
- One of my current favorite gospel tunes
and favorite Carter family ones as well.
I just, I love this tune.
I hope you do, too.
Yup.
For fear the hearts of men are failing
For these are latter days we know
The Great Depression now is spreading
God's word declared it would be so
I'm going where there's no depression
To the lovely land that's free from care
I'll leave this world of toil and trouble
My home's in Heaven, I'm going there
In that bright land
There'll be no hunger
No orphan children crying for bread
No weeping widows, toil or struggle
No shroud, no coffin, and no death
I'm going where there's no depression
To the lovely land that's free from care
I'll leave this world of toil and trouble
My home's in Heaven, I'm going there
(guitar solo)
In this dark hour of midnight nearing
And tribulation time will come
The storms will hurl the midnight fears
And sweep lost millions to their doom
I'm going where there's no depression
To the lovely land that's free from care
I'll leave this world of toil and trouble
My home's in Heaven, I'm going there
My home's in Heaven, I'm going there
(audience applauds)
- Thank you very much, friends.
We're gonna do one that we wrote here,
this is a bit of a, a slower tune.
This one is for our bass player, Eric Paulsen.
He goes unmentioned so often that we have to,
have to play a song for him.
This is one called The Buckeye Tree.
- I hitchhiked here.
- The mike's over there.
- Oh, I don't even think I'll use a mike.
- This is our saw player, Adam Wirtzfeld.
I'm shocked.
- I'm shocked, too.
- I hitchhiked.
- He hitchiked, I'm not making this up.
His motorcycle broke down,
threw a piston on the way up here.
We didn't think he was gonna make it,
and he said, yes he's got one more.
- One more.
- He said, I'll just start hitchhiking
and you can come pick me up if 'm not there yet.
That is perservere--
And you know he carries his saw in a rifle case.
(laughing)
I'm amazed anybody picked you up.
- Yeah!
- I wouldn't pick you up.
- One, two, three, four.
(mid tempo bluegrass)
The sun was shining it was so sunny
Through the trees blew a warm breeze
I hugged my baby up close to me
Underneath the buckeye tree
I said now, listen, listen to me
It all is right, as right can be
So stay right here, right here with me
Underneath the buckeye tree
She said now, listen, listen to me
You know my love it runs deeply
But the city is calling me
From underneath the buckeye tree
When I awoke, awoke did me
There was no one close to me
I was all alone, alone was me
Underneath the buckeye tree
(audience applauds)
- Thank you so very much.
(fast bluegrass)
- Whoo hoo!
Whoo hoo!
Whoo hoo!
Whoo hoo!
Yeah!
Yes sir!
Whoo whee!
Whoo!
Whoo!
Yeah!
(music quiets)
(volume grows)
All right!
(fast fiddle and banjo)
(audience applauds)
- Mr. Rick Lee on the fiddle there.
Kimberley Rowe dancing
that Appalachian cloggin' for ya.
One, two, three.
(upbeat bluegrass)
Sure on this shining night
A star made shadows frown
Kindness must watch for me
Beside the ground
- Mr. Adman Wirtzman!
(saw solo)
- [Voiceover] Thank you for watching
