First Lady Michelle Obama: For those of you who are wondering how to get involved
with Let's Move, there are many ways that people can step up.
One of the first things I would encourage you to do is go to our
website at LetsMove.gov, and there we have a number of
resources and stories that are shared.
You can find out about the -- all the programs that we're
promoting through Let's Move.
So that's the first step.
But I encourage you to think about what's happening locally
in your community, because one size doesn't fit all here.
So you may find that in your community you want to start a
community garden.
I've gotten letters from people around the country who've been
motivated and found the inspiration through Let's Move
to start their own community gardens or even their own
gardens in their own backyards, and you don't have to have a big
plot of land.
You know, I live at the White House, I have a lot of room,
but all you need is a back porch or a container.
There are people who are growing fresh vegetables on their
rooftops in the middle of big cities.
But again, you can go to the website and learn how
to do that.
Getting involved with your church is another important way.
We have Let's Move faith communities,
and we're encouraging people through their churches to get
their congregations on board eating right,
changing the menus at church functions and doing some
walking challenges.
Kids and families can participate together by trying
to get a President's Active Lifestyle Award, PALA.
You know, we just surpassed our goal,
we wanted to get one million PALA awards,
but we're at 1.7 million, but we still want more
families involved.
And in this way, you and your child or a child and a parent or
a grandparent commit to doing a certain amount of physical
activity every day for consecutive weeks,
and you can earn an award from the President.
But I think people should understand that it doesn't take
a lot to change the way kids eat and think about food.
It can be as simple as adding water to the diet or taking out
sugary snacks or maybe making dessert a once a week treat, or,
again, following MyPlate, which is a wonderful tool for helping
families understand what a healthy plate looks like,
with large amounts of protein -- or fruits and vegetables with
limited amounts of protein.
So we encourage you to go to the website, we have great ideas.
And more importantly, we have people who are sharing what
they're doing in their own homes, in their own communities.
But everyone can do something.
So we hope you all get on board.
