Mitt Romney is scrambling to pick up his campaign after left-leaning magazine Mother Jones leaked
a video recording of Romney telling donors 47 percent of Americans pay no income taxes,
believe they're victims entitled to government help, and will vote for President Obama no
matter what.
“And my job is not to worry about those people and they should take responsibility
and care for their lives.”
WOFL reports Democrats were quick to criticise and Republicans came to his defense, even
calling his statements fair. Ted Strickland, a co-chair on the Obama campaign, and Bay
Buchanan, a senior campaign adviser to Romney had this to say:
STRICKLAND: “He’s very sly...if you aren’t a part of his social class...that somehow
you’re a parasite.”
BUCHANAN: “He was analyzing. Certain
people are with Barack, certain people we have....and that’s who we’re going to
appeal to.”
And CNN reports a split among conservatives about his recent message to donors.
Rush Limbaugh says, “This could be the opportunity...that campaign to finally take
the gloves off and take the fear off and just start explaining conservatism. Start explaining
liberty to people and... explain that they don't have to be in that 47%”
And an editor for RedState.com tweeted he wishes “Romney would talk more about this
issue on the trail.”
But Weekly Standard editor William Kristol compared the comments to Obama talking about
“bitter” voters who “cling to guns and religion” in 2008: “Romney's comments,
like those of Obama four years ago, are stupid and arrogant.”
President Obama came on The Late Show with David Letterman with his response to the video.
“When I won in 2008, 47 percent of the American people voted for John McCain...My expectation
is if you wanna be president, you gotta work for everybody, not just for some.”
On Tuesday - Romney backed up his claims on Fox News.
“It’s not elegantly stated, let me put it that way. I was speaking off the cuff in
response to a question and I’m sure I could state it more clearly in a more effective
way.”
According to a new poll from Quinnipiac University, the New York Times and CBS News, Romney is
barely keeping up.
In Wisconsin, Obama holds 51 percent of the vote and Romney with 45 percent
In Colorado, Obama is leading with only one point at 48 percent and Romney with 47 percent
In
Virginia, Obama has 50 percent of the votes and Romney with just 46%
There are just 7 weeks until the election.
