So what's the hidden job market?
There's some research out in the US that suggests that up to 70 per cent
of jobs that are going, never really, truly get advertised for an open position.
I have no reason to believe it's much different in Australia.
Certainly I've benefitted personally from gaining positions and promotions that were
never truly advertised and were truly open.
Argue it if you want; it's a reality.
So the hidden job market is how you can access positions where there isn't
competition, where people might be predisposed already to hiring you, and it revolves
around finding positions through professional networks.
Through the informal networks that exist across our society, rather than just what happens
to be in the 'positions vacant' section of the newspaper.
That's an important section you don't want to neglect.
What you really want to do is to build your networks, your associations, your memberships
of areas so you can access the hidden job market that can come
about from someone having a sudden need, talking to one of their friends who happens to be
in your network, the friend makes the connection that you and their friend should be
talking, and away you are.
The hidden job market's a very, very powerful way of being positively referred into a position and
of avoiding a lot of competition for that job that you deserve.
