Hello.
My name is William.
I am a captioner for a company called Ai-Media.
I've been a captioner for three years.
I'm a student of Certificate II Sign Language at Randwick TAFE.
Today I want to tell you the story of my sign name.
When I started working in captioning,
my company had a Melbourne Cup party.
Everyone was wearing their fanciest suits
and ties, and hats.
But not me, I completely forgot!
I got to work and I looked around and I thought,
"I forgot Melbourne Cup!"
I thought, "I need something fancy, quick!"
I had a newspaper that I had been reading on the train,
and I looked down at it and I thought,
"Maybe I have an idea..."
So, I tore the newspaper up, and cut it, and scrunched it up
and put it on my head, as a hat.
I hoped that people would look at me and laugh
because I had forgotten.
There were two deaf people working at Ai-Media at the time -
Alex Jones, this is his sign name,
and Leonie Jackson, this is her sign name.
They both looked at my hat, and I think they found it funny.
I think they found it funny, because later,
they both said to me,
"You have a sign name now."
This is my sign name.
When they told me I had a sign name, I was shocked.
I was so surprised!
I have a sign name!
I was so excited!
I never thought that I would have one.
Now, I love telling the story of my sign name to people
for two reasons.
The first reason is it's just a funny story.
The second reason is I am very proud to have a sign name,
because I know that a sign name is a gift.
Working in captioning is amazing.
I love my job and I love having a sign name.
And that's the end of my story.
Thank you for watching me.
I hope you all have a good day!
Thank you.
