We were in Spring, in March,
and in Portugal the weather was fine, quite good…
Thinking about the month that we travelled,
in Poland the weather was much colder than in Portugal.
Here, we only wore a coat and a t-shirt and
in Poland we needed several sweaters and many coats.
Cold
As we travelled in March, the weather here was much warmer,
it was very nice, while in Poland it was really cold. Therefore, I noticed a very big difference indeed.
Here the weather is completely different, it’s much warmer. Spring begins in March and by that time of the year
it’s much colder in Poland…
It exceeded my expectations
because it was colder than I had thought.
I was ready…
Yes, I was expecting that.
I was expecting low temperatures…
I took warm clothes, really warm clothes,
thus I was comfortable all the time.
Yes, I was expecting that.
We even had snow…
When I was packing I put many coats, many woolly hats, gloves because for two weeks we had to be prepared.
The Polish landscape was very beautiful, with its mountains and snow…
It was really nice, all covered in snow,
we weren’t able to see the meadows but we could guess they were amazing.
Very hilly and full of trees, many more than in Portugal, I guess… and very different.
I think that the landscape is really very beautiful.
Many plains, many mountains…
I also thought that the vegetation was pretty much like what we have in Portugal.
Architecture was what I appreciated the most, concerning Arts.
The monuments, the buildings…
Everything was completely different!
The churches…
What I liked the most was music because I had the opportunity
to go to bars and I found out that they like live music a lot.
We went to the Chopin Museum and learnt about music.
When it comes to Arts, well…
I didn’t pay too much attention to that…
They respect religion a lot. Everything was so beautifully built, very symmetrical which I really like in Art.
Art was what I liked the most and it could be seen everywhere.
Yes, I think Poland is a religious country.
Yes, a lot more religious than Portugal.
They took us to many churches.
Polish people really respect religion.
I think the main influence to them is the Pope John Paul II.
There is even a cake which was the Pope’s favourite.
I tried the cake but I didn’t like it very much.
I tried it. I think I had already eaten a similar cake in Portugal.
It tastes like Portuguese custards.
I ate the cake.
I didn’t have the opportunity to sit in the Pope’s seat, unfortunately.
They worship the Pope almost like God.
A hero
A hero, isn’t it?
He is kind of an idol to them.
There was suffering, yes…
when we went to Auschwitz.
It’s a wound left by the Second World War,
something impossible to forget.
Auschwitz is a very strong experience.
Yes, in Krakow there were many signs of the war.
I don’t recall a lot about that.
There are many, especially in Krakow.
Even before having been to Poland,
I had already seen Schindler’s List when I was a kid and I remember having seen the attacks to Krakow.
So, when I visited the city many things were already familiar and many buildings showed marks of the Second World War.
My free time…
Well, I went sightseeing, I skated, visited museums, churches…
I spent my free time with the host families and also with the Portuguese colleagues.
I went with my host family to a beautiful mountain.
I went sightseeing a lot, the Polish took me to many interesting places, we were always together. It was quite fun.
The cost of living in Poland is cheaper than in Portugal.
I think it was a little bit more expensive.
Cheaper…
I think they live a bit worse than us, I’m not sure.
Buying is easier for us there…
things aren’t that much cheaper but still they are cheaper.
Polish food is very different from the Portuguese. At lunch we ate mostly sandwiches.
I ate a type of food there that was served in a bowl and had a white sauce and potatoes.
It was delicious!
I had never tried that dish before and it tasted really good.
I really liked my host mother’s cooking,
although I didn’t appreciate Polish food in other places.
I remember trying a traditional Polish soup… it was amazingly delicious! I really liked it!
I only really tried the Polish food in a farm that we visited.
I didn’t like it very much, essentially because the smashed potatoes that I’m used to don’t taste like goat milk so much,
and breaded steak is not my favourite food.
I would like to go there again.
In two words: absolutely magnificent!
Unparalleled and magical!
Tiring.
Fun!
Phenomenal!
Very nice!
Different and fantastic!
They asked me to beatbox.
It's very cold there. But I liked to know the country.
It’s a different country and the experience was striking.
