a little more about selection,

layer type:
Text,
plus a demonstration in GIMP, and Photoshop.
Colors on a monitor are basically glowing dots of light, with mixtures of red green and blue.
Many computers use 24 ones and zeros to represent
the amount of red, green, and blue.
Typically eight digits for red, eight digits for green, eight digits for blue,
which yields us 16.7 million colors.
With some mathematical Hocus Pocus,
we can change that to base 16,
hexidecimal, and use only two digits for red, two digits for green, and two digits for blue.
The numbers range from 0 thorugh F.
The most basic combinations are shown here.
You can find color charts that give you even more color options.
In GIMP, if you have a photograph open and wish to duplicate a color, you can use the eyedropper tool.
Then you can change to a different image, and duplicate that color.
By selecting a color,
you can get the hex code
or change it to a known hexidecimal value.
In Photoshop, again,
you can use the eyedropper tool
to select a color from one image,
and then switching to another image,
edit the color to that same hexidecimal value.
Selection.
I've opened a photograph of the cherry blossoms in Washington, DC; We know that we can use the rectangular selection tool
to better focus our image,
and crop.
If I choose the elliptical selection tool,
create an oval,
if I choose Image\Crop
of it does not get rid of everything... you cannot have a round picture.
But we could go to Select\
Invert
click our eraser tool,
and erase everything *outside* of the selection.

Another option using the elliptical selection tool,
you can draw an oval, Edit\
Stroke selection...
to better emphasize the area.

We know if we Copy, we can Paste... which would create a floating layer;
Paste Into... which would add to the existing layer, or choose Paste As\New Layer. But in order for us to maintain these layers we have to
Save As an xcf file.
[Silence]
In Photoshop, a psd
can maintain our layers.
An additional layer typed that is very useful is Text
If I open the same image in Paint, and decide to add my name... If I accidentally misspell my name...
this cannot be edited.
If I choose my eraser,
it erases everything.
In GIMP,
if we choose the Text tool,
and start typing,
this creates a separate text layer;
this came out too small, if I click on the Text tool,
I can enlarge the space,
change the size of the text,
click off to the other layer, and continue editing.
This becomes a vector shape, which is editable.
As you might expect, Photoshop is slightly more elegant in the process...
if I choose the Text tool... again my options for the text are above... start with a larger font, I type in my name...
that's not large enough...
I can simply re-edit.
If I don't like where the text is,
I can move it.
