Good morning everyone and welcome,
on this sunny day in Glasgow at Caledonian University.
It’s my great pleasure to welcome you to this CIC Start Event.
My name is Archie Ferguson,
I’m Chair of the Scottish Construction Forum,
which is the strategic and political arm of the industry.
We also work closely with the
Scottish Construction Centre which is the operational arm.
Today’s event is quite unique in bringing together
a project undertaken by seven universities,
who are to be commended for t his innovative
approach to enagaging people in a very important topic.
This topic of Low-Carbon and Sustainability,
today’s topic is in-fact Sustainable Refurbishment,
and here in Scotland we have a
unique situation in terms of our buildings.
And in tackling the climate change agenda,
on the one hand the new-builds are to some extent easier,
starting from the beginning,
whereas our older buildings require particular attention.
And today experts will share with you their expertise,
their knowledge,
and their good practice in different environments
over the course of the conference that you can dip in and out of,
and hopefully learn a great deal from
as you move our agenda forward.
You will be aware that worldwide,
and in the UK and Scotland in particular,
we have policies and we have targets to meet.
These targets are very tight,
and that’s why this first of three one-day
conferences is so important,
in making the best use of people’s time
in their busy working days,
and sharing the best of what we have here in
the country and moving the agenda forward.
It may interest you to know that we have
some top-class people in this country,
and I would like to mention Professor Sean Smith of Napier University,
who has now joined the Scottish Construction Forum,
and gives that particular expertise to our work.
And to Branka and her team who have
put this conference together,
I would like to thank them.
The agenda is full, the topics are serious,
and you have the opportunity to fufill the
Government wish to be at the cutting edge
of these developments worldwide.
I wish you well, I wish you success on the day,
please engage, please stay with it,
and please be part of the future as we move forward.
Thank you very much.
