What I am going to show you in this segment is some basic shew cuts, a smoothing cut,
how to cut a bead, how to cut a V, how to do a peeling cut for a shoulder and how to
do a smoothing cut on the side. Remount the piece in the lathe, for the smoothing cut
we rub the bevel of the skew against the wood, bring it down until it is flush, you should
get a nice smooth surface and then cut the bead. I mark two areas, start and to center,
roll the tool.
What is important on rolling the tool as you go over is you bring the bottom up, on a v
cut, make your first mark, go in from the sides and you want to rub the bevel on each
side of the v. For the peeling cut with the radius gouge, take it from the top and just
let it, bring your handle up slightly to peel the wood down and for your squaring cut you
want to take the beveled side and rub it against the edge of the wood. This should give you
a smooth square cut on the side of your piece.
